Kolhapur is situated on the banks of the river Panchganga and is the location of the Temple of Mahalakshmi, a Hindu goddess. Its a city of palaces and gardens, it is a historic Maratha city, with the Mahalakshmi temple forming the focus.

Mahalaxmi Temple

The most interesting part of every tourist visit to Kolhapur is the offering of prayesr to Mahalxmi goddess. It is said that every devotee after seeking the blessing of lord Triputi Balaji also visit Shri Mahalaksmi to seek her blessing as well as to complete the holy pilgrims.
It is situated around 3 km from Bus stand and Railway station.

This palace belongs to Chhatrapati Sahuji Maharaj. This palace is situated around 2-3 km from railway station. Palace campus is very large and contains a small area for animals and birds.  A large collection of Swords and gun fire equipment magnifies the interest. Apart from  antique paining and article, a large collection of article made by animals skins and khurs ( last portion of feet) are here. Various animals are preserved here by some way like lion ,tiger, birds and junglee buffalo.
Taking pictures are banned here so i am posting picture of outside the museum.
I saw a dancing peacock which was a amazing experience. This place of good hangout picnic place for tourist and  families.

Rankala Lake
Rankala Lake is situated a walk able distance from mahalakshmi temple. Most relaxing moment a feel at side of this lake. You should come the time of sunset and relax here. Boating clubs are also here which gives you ride of 15 mins of the lake. A kind of Chowpati feel comes here by plenty of options of food and snakes. One most important thing i forgot to tell about Kolhapur is spicy food.
I loved the food of Kolhapur specially Jhunka bhakari,Veg Kolhapuri,Veg Banjara and last but not least Misal pav - i had it three time in 2 days :-).
As i am vegetarian so i unable to comment about non-veg food. But my friends were appreciating the non-veg food also.

  9. Hi
Kolhapur is a city on the banks of the Panchaganga River, in the west Indian state of Maharashtra. It’s known for its temples, like the ancient Mahalakshmi Temple, a Hindu pilgrimage site. The Bhavani Mandap is an imposing old palace with a small museum displaying stuffed wild animals. Close by, Rankala Lake is surrounded by gardens. The hilltop Jyotiba Temple complex is on the city's outskirts.
